Mesothelioma is a cancer which is associated with the mesothelium, or protective tissue which makes up the peritoneal cavity, thoracic cavity, and heart sac. The mesothelium is a mixture of connective tissue and epithelial cells that secretes a lubricant which allows for the frictionless repositioning of organs within the body. Although there are cases of peritoneal and pericardial mesothelioma, the majority of cases begin in the pleural, lung covering, and mesothelium.

Mesothelioma is most commonly the result of asbestos exposure. Asbestos is a known carcinogen which has had its use banned in the US since the mid 70's. The use of asbestos prior to the mid 1970's exposed tens of thousands of workers to asbestos which has resulted in countless illnesses. Mesothelioma often takes decades to develop and is being seen more commonly now than it ever has been before. Mesothelioma is treatable but is often quite advanced before it is discovered and, once spread, is difficult to treat. Mesothelioma will advance quickly if not treated, and results in a painful and certain death in the cases where treatment is no longer possible.

The companies, who allowed their workers to work around asbestos knowing it caused health problems, have been found liable for their former employees’ illnesses. Companies are liable since many were warned by medical groups of the potential health effects of asbestos years before it was banned and these companies continued to use asbestos without adequately informing or protecting their employees.
