Mesothelioma Information

Many people diagnosed with mesothelioma are looking to find information on the disease, its causes, and possible treatment. Mesothelioma is an aggressive cancer which, in 90% of patients, has been caused by asbestos exposure. The other 10% of cases are deemed to be naturally occurring and have no other identified risk factors associated with them. Mesothelioma can take decades to develop, so individuals who were exposed to asbestos 30 years ago are just developing the cancer today.

Mesothelioma is a cancer of the mesothelium, the lining layer of tissue which makes up the peritoneal cavity, pleural cavity, and heart sac. The mesothelium is also responsible for creating the lubrication that allows for movement of organs within the body. Although all types of mesothelium are susceptible to mesothelioma, 70% of mesothelioma cases occur in the pleural mesothelium which surrounds the lungs. Proximity to the lungs, asbestos' route of entry, is believed to be the reason why asbestos related mesothelioma is much more common in the pleural mesothelium.

Mesothelioma, like most cancers, is usually treated with a combination of radiation, surgical removal, and chemotherapy. Successful treatment requires early detection, which in many cases can be difficult because early symptoms are nondescript and resemble those of less serious illnesses and general aging. Treatment is further complicated due to the fact that a majority of those diagnosed with mesothelioma are over age 60 and may have other medical illnesses which can complicate treatment and reduce chances of survival. The best way to ensure effective treatment is by treating the cancer as soon as it is diagnosed.
