Mesothelioma Tumors

As is common with many other cancers, mesothelioma is usually associated with large masses known as tumors. These tumors start out as a few cells that begin to divide without the same type of control or regulation that is seen with normal and healthy cells. The mesothelioma cells will divide out of control, taking up space within the thin mesothelium lining body cavities. These tumors force on the surrounding organs. If the tumor is cancerous, it can spread to other organs, which once there, the cancer cells will take the place of normally functioning cells and can decrease organ function or even cause complete organ failure.

In cases where the mesothelioma cells are still confined to a single or series of tumors and still haven't spread, they are much easier to treat. A combination of surgical removal, chemotherapy, and radiation therapy can prove highly effective against early stages of mesothelioma.

If tumors begin to spread, the chances of successful treatment drops drastically. Mesothelioma advances quickly and has in many cases gone from a couple of small tumors to being observed on 3 or more organs and even becoming blood borne, which tends to be the final stage of cancer.

A strong link between asbestos exposure and mesothelioma has been made. Although it can take years to develop, mesothelioma advances quickly once it has developed. Early detection is key to successful treatment. Early symptoms include pain, labored breathing or difficult digestion, bulging abdomen, decreased dissolved oxygen, and shortness of breath. Early symptoms are being taken more seriously by doctors than ever before. By explaining asbestos exposure to a doctor, he or she will be able to tell what symptoms relate to mesothelioma. X-rays, CAT scans, and MRIs all prove themselves very effective to locating the mesothelioma tumors. Once an early diagnosis is made, treatment can begin.
