Papillary Mesothelioma

Papillary mesothelioma is a rare form of mesothelioma which is of low malignant potential, and by comparison to the majority of mesothelioma cases is easy to treat and has a good prognosis. It is a form of epithelial mesothelioma that is most commonly found in women between the ages of 30 and 40. Papillary mesothelioma has had few enough cases that the disease has yet to have any treatment standardized but it is currently treated similar to other cases of mesothelioma and responds well to treatment. At this time, papillary mesothelioma has a high rate of recurrence and further research is being done to find treatment options which can more completely treat this rare disease.

Although it is commonly seen it younger women, this rare form of mesothelioma can also occur in men of about 50 years of age in the pleural mesothelium. Most cases of papillary mesothelioma have no link to asbestos, though some case have a history of asbestos exposure. Further research into the cause of papillary mesothelioma may lead to an answer about the route of this cancer and ways to prevent its development. Since it is one of the few types of mesothelioma that might be prevented, a lot of research is going into discovering what causes papillary mesothelioma.

Because the majority of papillary mesothelioma cases are benign, tumors are most commonly singular well defined masses. Surgical removal and chemotherapy are effective at curing the disease even though recurrence rates are still high. Recurrent papillary mesothelioma is treated like any other case and responds well to treatment.
